The Sunday School is not a little church, a little kingdom of its own. It is the teaching ministry of the church, functioning at one specific time on Sunday morning. It does not exist separate and apart from “the church.” The leaders of the Sunday School are not in competition with other responsible persons in the church. By the same token, the entire church must recognize the importance and worth of the Christian nurture that takes place within the Sunday Church School. The Sunday Church School is not just for boys and girls. Each person in the life and fellowship of the church should feel that he or she is a part of the Sunday School. We must provide Christian nurture for every person, regardless of his age, marital status, and sex, and regardless of his ability or limitations. The Sunday School should never be competitive with any other agency of the church – certainly not at the point of worship. Every member of the Sunday School, however, ought to have an opportunity to worship God in a setting which is planned according to his or her own age group need. That is to say, boys & girls should be encouraged to attend the worship services of the church in company with their parents, if possible. At the same time, the Sunday Church School should provide graded worship for them in their own classes or departments. It is in these worship experiences that we learn the language and the worship patterns of the church. Worship must not be thought of as something separate and apart from the educational experience. Furthermore, the Sunday School can help its members grow as Christians if each group in the school is encouraged to strengthen its own fellowship. Whether for children, young people or adults, each class or group should provide satisfying experiences for its members so that people feel at home, accepted and wanted, and a part of this redemptive fellowship. |
